Rotherhithe and Surrey Quays, SE16

Area overview

Rotherhithe is a beautiful, historic village located in South East London within the London Borough of Southwark. It is situated on a peninsula on the south bank of the Thames and is part of the area known as Docklands. Surrey Quays is the name given to the residential area of Rotherhithe which forms the eastern part of the peninsula.

Believed to be Anglo-Saxon in origin, Rotherhithe was known as a port as far back as the 12th century and then as a shipyard and working docks after Elizabethan times. During the 1980s over 90% of the docks were filled in to make way for an extensive regeneration programme, and the name Surrey Quays was adopted in 1989 as part of the process.

Rotherhithe and Surrey Quays are not only popular with young professionals in search of riverside living close to the City, but are also gaining popularity among young families. There is good local schooling in the area, with some schools achieving an “Outstanding” Ofsted rating.

Shopping in Rotherhithe is centred around the Surrey Quays Shopping Centre which is home to a wide variety of high street stores. There are also a good selection of local shops and a 24-hour supermarket. A monthly famers’ market is held at Surrey Docks Farm. Terrace, at Hilton London Docklands Riverside, is a modern restaurant with an outdoor terrace area that has panoramic river views and excellent reviews from locals.

Surrey Quays is an area where old meets new, and its maritime past is reflected in many of its bars and restaurants. The Moby Dick is a stylish waterside pub with an excellent selection of real ales, wines and home-cooked food. The Mayflower, one of the oldest pubs on the Thames dating back to 1624, also sits on the riverbank and has beautiful views across the Thames.
